Cyril Chavis, Jr. grew up in Virginia Beach, VA. Cyril was a book nerd who enjoyed wrestling and marital arts growing up. After highschool, Cyril went to the University of Virginia, graduating in 2013. Cyril grew up in a Christian household, but he first came to experience God's amazing grace after his first year of college. God became more than just the icing on the cake of an already "great" life. God taught Cyril what it truly means to stand before God and recognize ones own unworthiness to receive anything good from God, but God also taught Cyril how infinite and radical is God's love for messed up people like himself. Cyril, putting up a spiritual "help wanted" sign, began to receive love and wisdom from a campus ministry in college. Even though a knuckle head and proud, Cyril began to develop a passion for God and for ministry.
Cyril became a MIT and was licensed to preach the gospel by Mt. Gilead Missionary Baptist Church in 2012, and after graduating from UVA, Cyril completed a year long Pastoral Residency with Portico Church, both playing a huge role in helping him discern God's call to Gospel ministry and a life of loving others. With the blessing of several pastors, Cyril was encouraged to enroll in seminary for theological formation and development. Upon arrival at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Cyril immediately got involved with RUF at Jackson State as a volunteer and then later as an intern under Pastor Elbert McGowan. Now on staff, Cyril will act as an interim campus minister, serving the students through the preaching of God's word. Other than preaching, Cyril's focus areas will also be the development of student leaders, the organization of large group bible studies, and the oversight of financial stewardship.
Cyril enjoys laughing at corny jokes, kicking it with friends, watching movies, listening to new music, and hanging with his wife, Jenell.
